Mowat calls for more money for Warrington's schools

Local MP for Warrington, David Mowat took to the floor of the House of Commons last week to challenge Education Ministers over the low levels of funding for Warrington’s schools.

Warrington is currently the 137th best-funded local education authority out of 152 authorities and yet received no additional money from the Government’s recent uplift. David Mowat challenged Education Minister David Laws to explain the Government’s reasoning.

David Mowat said:

“It’s quite unacceptable that Westminster, ranked 10th best-funded authority in the country, is to be given more money whilst Warrington gets nothing.

“Teachers and pupils in Warrington are working hard and achieving great results, but those results could be even better if the schools weren’t constantly scrapping around for funds.

“That’s why I’ve been campaigning for a national funding formula to address these disparities and allocate funds according to the needs of the pupils.”

New Enterprise Allowance helping people in Warrington to get off benefits and start their own business

Local MP for Warrington, David Mowat has welcomed new figures showing that 280 people in Warrington have been helped off benefits and are now running their own business, under the Government’s New Enterprise Allowance scheme.

The allowance – which supports people on out of work benefits to start their own business – has helped more than 46,000 people across the country to set up successful businesses since it was introduced in April 2011.

The support available to people starts with help from a business mentor to develop their business idea. Then, once they have got the business up and running, and have moved off benefits, they are eligible for 26 weeks of financial support as they get their business going.

David Mowat said:

It’s excellent news that 280 people in Warrington have been helped to get off benefits and to realise their dream of starting their own businesses and being their own boss. Small businesses, are a hugely important part of our community and vital to local jobs.

“That’s why supporting small businesses is an important part of the Conservatives’ long-term economic plan. There’s more to do, but these figures show that our support is helping people to get off benefits and running their own business, giving them the promise of a better and brighter future. And each new job these businesses create is another family in Warrington with the security of a regular pay packet.”

Helping hardworking people to find homes in Warrington

Local MP, David Mowat has welcomed figures showing that the Conservatives are delivering new affordable homes and helping hardworking people to get on the housing ladder in Warrington.

In Warrington, 930 new affordable homes have been delivered since 2010 and 141 people have been able to buy their own home thanks to Help to Buy, giving more families the opportunity to move into a good quality, affordable home and plan for their future.

Nearly 200,000 new affordable homes have now been delivered across the country since 2010 while Help to Buy has enabled over 27,000 people to buy their own home. Thanks to the Conservative’s long-term economic plan, Britain is now building more homes than at any time since 2007.

David Mowat said:

‘Labour cut the number of social homes to rent and their Great Recession led to a collapse in housebuilding meaning thousands of families could not find a home they could afford.

‘That’s why the Conservatives, as part of our long-term economic plan, took action to get Britain building again and launched Help to Buy to help couples trapped on high rents afford homes of their own. Thanks to these policies, 930 new affordable homes have now been delivered and 141 people have been able to buy their own home in Warrington.

‘Our long-term economic plan is helping people to find a good quality, affordable home where they can raise a family, contribute to their communities and enjoy greater financial security.’
